To use an extreme example to just set the precedent that SOMETIMES the press shouldn't report all it knows.

If the press learns that the FBI is conducting a sting operation on a local strip club believing it has ties to child pornography, should they print the article in the paper the next day?

umm how about a warrantless violation of personal freedoms ?

And that 'sometimes' is a very fine line ... a line that tips the balance of freedoms.

plus the example you have used is far too narrow for the much broader implications of the programs being exposed today.

This one's different than the wiretaps, Ruck.  This was a paper reporting that the US is tracking specific bank accounts located in Belgium and investigating them for links to terrorism.  The New York post plastered the CIA's investigation all over the front page.

The 9/11 commission, composed of democrats and republicans, conservatives and liberals, specifically broke from the meeting recommending that the executive branch vehemently investigate foreign money trails to recognize trends of the terrorist cells, because, in their opinion, the CIA failed in its role to do so in the months leading up to 9/11.  This vote says that the press are the ones failing us this time.

This is all wasted breath of course since you believe 9/11 was not conducted by terrorists, but understand that not everybody, and apparently not Congress, believes the same.

yes DD, the 9-11 commision. Sigh, the same commision that didnt say one single word about WTC 7

not one.

And what really gets me is the fact that this 'war on terror' is an indefinite entity, that quite possibly could never end.  So basically any and all warrantless surveillance at the present could very well be here to stay. And these are just the ones we know about.

I'm extremely glad that this happens and I hope it continues. Just to hear the sound of that bush lapdog gonzales make up false confirmations of legallity are enough to drive me to laughter. Like how he told the press that the wiretaps, discovered BEFORE the '04 election, which was held till well AFTER the election, were perfectly legal and EVERYONE in congress knew about it. But in that instance I think the press failed as bad as the government.

To be fair, an official report hasn't been released on the collapse of that tower.
