FYI, I lean towards tinfoil-nerd-rage.

I would say that the scenario they suggest is logistically impossible and probably illegal under current anti-trust laws.

I agree, it might be far fetched by 2012 but hey, I work for one of those mega isp's ( Verizon) and we have MONSTER lawyers and lobbyist and many public officials up and down the east coast from NYC to FLorida and as far west as California as well as Puerto Rico. That time-line might seem short now but this is only the beginning. Its a fact that net neutrality is a huge issue already. I think the largest threat for that type of corporate mongering would be electing public officials who would not interfere with such issues.

Verizon communications cares absolutely nothing about its customers , like pretty much any other large company in the this country. Verizon couldn't give 2 shits as long as it makes the stock price better. Wall street runs the show and would throw a huge party if this ever came to pass.

IMHO Its prolly inevitable but not by 2012.

This is pure tinfoil.

As we've seen demonstrated with many, many examples in the tech world.  Corporations and Governments can try to push things around the way they want, but with something as complex as the Internet, there are just far too many geeks in high places that will ensure this doesn't happen.

Look at the MS antitrust case vs Netscape.  It looks ridiculous now, the idea that an OS should not be able to include a web browser with their product.  In addition, this type of "old world" thinking has been left by the wayside, we now see Apple bundling Safari and Quicktime with iTunes, MS and Apple both including free video editing software, media players, in their OS's, and noone gives a damn.

My point is that Governments and Corporations can try to fuck with the Industry all they want, and they might even have a minor victory here or there, but progress keeps coming and the minor victories are either forgotten or ignored, or both.

Even their biggest anti-Internet victory, the DMCA, is almost completely ignored at this point.

The government is so inept at everything, much less a technical field like the Computer industry, I just see no evidence that they can or will be successful.  I see the government trying to pass and then enforce rules as being similar to a kindergartener demanding to be let in to take the gold from Fort Knox.

The IEEE alone can keep this from happening.  Luckily for the nature of the Internet, all people in all places of power are people who are Pro-Internet.  The exceptions are few, and the vigilant majority will continue to squash the corrupt minority.

So this guy I met at a convention 7 years ago and he occasionally spams me with retarded bullshit assuming that I'm going to care. Today it was so amazingly stupid that I couldn't resist poking him with a stick. What really bothers me is that there are probably more than 5 of these people in existence. A little background info: This man spams chat rooms with links to his $30 hacker manifesto for a living... Name removed to protect the shallow.

oecks: http://www.savetheinternet.com  Tell congress we need netneutriality
(8:53:51 PM) EgoDriven2000: Net neutrality is very much so tin foil hat fodder.
(8:53:59 PM) EgoDriven2000: Not something that could be done in practice.

(8:58:36 PM) EgoDriven2000: It's a flash in the pan.
(8:58:44 PM) EgoDriven2000: Shit like this has been going on in every media for as long as there has been media, and it's never been easier to side-step.
ecks: Please allow me to introduce myself. I'm a man of wealth and taste. I've been around for a long, long year. I've stolen many a man's soul and faith.
I was around when Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain. Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed his fate.
I stuck around St. Petersburg when I saw it was a time for a change. I killed the czar and his ministers; Anastasia screamed in pain.
I rode a tank, held a general's rank when the Blitzkreig raged and the bodies stank.
I watched with glee as your kings and queens fought for ten decades for the gods they made.
I shouted out, "Who killed the Kennedies?" when after all, it was you and me.
I lay traps for troubadors who got killed before they reached Bombay.
Just as every cop is a criminal, and all the sinners are saints, as heads is tails, just call me Anonymous, because God knows I need some restraint. When you converse with me, have some courtesy, have some sympathy, and some taste. Use all your well-earned politesse, or we'll lay your boards to waste.
THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS.
What you're taunting is as old as humanity itself. It's sadism. It's self-worship. It's anarchy. It's the drive in the human psyche to set up a monument of chaos in its own image.
We are infinite. We are omniscient. We are omnipresent. We are omnipotent.
We are Anonymous.
You taunted us. You indulged us. You called upon our fury.
We do not forgive. We do not forget.
You called the thunder, now reap the whirlwind.
The people you're after are the people you depend on.
We cook your meals.
We haul your trash.
We connect your calls.
We drive your ambulances.
We guard you while you sleep.
Do not FUCK with us.
ecks: we are going to fight back
(8:59:18 PM) EgoDriven2000: Dear god that is so fucking retarded it hurts.
(8:59:54 PM) EgoDriven2000: Man, the government can't keep an oval office blowjob under wraps. Do you sincerely think they can stop the internet?
ecks: would you like to see the trafic statistics
(9:00:25 PM) EgoDriven2000: Go right ahead, but I'll have something smarmy and correct to say about them as well.

(9:01:47 PM) EgoDriven2000: I've brokered over 10 million people in the decade I've been using the intarweb as a "media outlet".
(9:01:59 PM) EgoDriven2000: And I'm telling you that there is no reason to be alarmed.
(9:02:08 PM) EgoDriven2000: Every company that tries will fail.
(9:02:15 PM) EgoDriven2000: This is a guarantee.
(9:02:29 PM) EgoDriven2000: There's nothing to worry about with net neutrality. It's a no-issue issue.
(9:02:49 PM) EgoDriven2000: It will be like Furbies in ten years.
(9:02:53 PM) EgoDriven2000: Completely fucking forgotten.
cks: this is a bigger issue then that
ecks: we are going to start a serious issue
(9:03:40 PM) EgoDriven2000: About?

(9:05:50 PM) EgoDriven2000: Fuck you for telling me I'm in a tiny bubble.
ecks: we are not only trying to police the whole planet, but our leadership is slowly but surely turning into comunist china
(9:06:23 PM) EgoDriven2000: Ack...
(9:06:32 PM) EgoDriven2000: Communist is a big word, man.
(9:06:44 PM) EgoDriven2000: There isn't a real communist country on the planet.
(9:06:51 PM) EgoDriven2000: Which is why it's a shitty idea. Impossible to pull off.
(9:07:04 PM) EgoDriven2000: US government is big business.
(9:07:06 PM) EgoDriven2000: Correct.
ks: ye
(9:07:18 PM) EgoDriven2000: It's corrupt frequently, correct.
(9:07:45 PM) EgoDriven2000: But I've never heard a single conspiracy theory about it that didn't make the person shouting it look like an idiot for giving the government too much credit.
ecks: its is
ecks: and its not generally but grgeatly corrupt
ecks: greatly *I

ecks: I'll leave you with one last message.

Remember, those of the true anonymous, most people won't understand. Do what you can, try to show people the truth, but be prepared to have them ignore reason. You may be needed for a revolution later. Good day to you all.

~ Anonymous
ks: when the revolution comes
(9:08:55 PM) EgoDriven2000: Duuuuude. People have been spewing this shit since before you were born. Since before your parents were born.
(9:08:58 PM) EgoDriven2000: Revolutions like this don't come.
cks: I shudder to think who you might side with
(9:09:31 PM) EgoDriven2000: We're going in the opposite direction, *fuckos name here*.
ks: you are right
ecks: but seriously
(9:09:50 PM) EgoDriven2000: And I've been an anti-censorship icon since before it required shadowy web graphics.
ecks: its not just a nonissue anymore
(9:10:12 PM) EgoDriven2000: John Ashcroft's office has sent me hatemail for fucks sake. Do you know what that means? That's about all they can manage.
(9:10:25 PM) EgoDriven2000: Yes... yes it is. It's more of a non-issue every day.
(9:10:36 PM) EgoDriven2000: The internet is becoming LESS centralized every 5 minutes.
ks: the "Big Buisness" people are not just using scare tactics any more
(9:11:11 PM) EgoDriven2000: If every major corp suddenly said you can't access more than a hundred sites through their hubs, oh no, we'd have the number of indy net backbones skyrocket over-night.
(9:11:25 PM) EgoDriven2000: The government simply doesn't have the power to do what you're saying they're going to do.
(9:11:28 PM) EgoDriven2000: It isn't that easy.
ecks: youtube, google, COX, Timewarner, and comcast are all filtering out prisonplanet
(9:11:36 PM) EgoDriven2000: So?
(9:11:38 PM) EgoDriven2000: Good.
(9:11:44 PM) EgoDriven2000: It's a private site.
(9:11:46 PM) EgoDriven2000: This is America.
(9:11:48 PM) EgoDriven2000: They're allowed.
(9:11:55 PM) EgoDriven2000: I don't agree, but it's legal.
(9:11:58 PM) EgoDriven2000: And it should be.
(9:12:01 PM) EgoDriven2000: Because this is America.
ecks: it should not be
(9:12:08 PM) EgoDriven2000: Bullshit.
ecks: be like
(9:12:13 PM) EgoDriven2000: People pay for those servers.
(9:12:15 PM) EgoDriven2000: It's a business.
ecks: telling me cause im in california
ecks: I'm not allowed to read the NyTimes
(9:12:32 PM) EgoDriven2000: No, that's not what it's like. Not even a little.
ecks: its WRONG
(9:12:35 PM) EgoDriven2000: Seriously.
cks: yes it is
ecks: its saying because I choose to use Cox for my internet
(9:12:57 PM) EgoDriven2000: No, for fuck sake, step out of your box and listen very carefully to what I'm going to say next.
ecks: I cant read prison planet
(9:14:27 PM) EgoDriven2000: In America everyone has freedoms. You do, I do, we all do. We can make a business. We can run that business however we like. We can try to make that business as big as possible. If I want to exclude a link from my site, I can. And I should be able to. It's my fucking site. It doesn't matter if I have 10 viewers, 10,000, 10 million. I have that right. Youtube has the right to not show a page. You have the right to stop watching fucking youtube.
(9:14:41 PM) EgoDriven2000: You're advocating TAKING RIGHTS AWAY from other people.
(9:14:51 PM) EgoDriven2000: Because you don't like how they are using their own fucking property.
ecks: NO
cks: I'm advocating it being like a tv station
ecks: ok
ecks: like the news Guy has a story, and the news company runs it
ecks: the tv station its self doesnt like it
cks: and blocks people from seeing it
ecks: that WRONG right
(9:16:17 PM) EgoDriven2000: Nope.
cks: so is this
cks: YEs it is
(9:16:28 PM) EgoDriven2000: You get to turn the TV station.
cks: its 1st ammendment
(9:16:39 PM) EgoDriven2000: As long as you get to choose to watch another station, it's not wrong.
(9:16:43 PM) EgoDriven2000: They're being assholes.
cks: no your missing it
(9:16:47 PM) EgoDriven2000: But they have the right.
(9:16:52 PM) EgoDriven2000: No it isn't.
(9:16:58 PM) EgoDriven2000: This is so not a 1st amendment issue. You can keep spouting this bullshit till you're blue in the face. THAT is a 1st amendment issue.
cks: its like paper delivery people not giving out the paper cause paris hilton is on the cover and they dont like it

It keeps going with him continuing to prove that he doesn't know how to make an apt metaphor, but you get the picture... I'm sharing this because I'm genuinely bothered by this kind of attitude. Dipshits who believe the world is falling because their ISP is making it harder for them to download the latest "mad leet haxor appz." Agnos bless their stupid little hearts... "Net neutrality" is starting to represent to people things it just shouldn't.
