With the trade deadline 2 days away, a trade that's been discussed on and off since week 2 is pushed to the forefront.

Why am I posting about it here?  Because it involves Spec, who is mathematically out of the playoffs.

------------------

Here's the deal, Spec is out, but he wants to rack up as many wins possible with the remaining games, and so he wants to trade for players with favorable matchups in the next three weeks, before the playoffs start, and his season ends.

So the trade would be for each of our top RB's.  Lynch for Tomlinson.  Before you decide based on reputation, consider the stats:

Lynch:
Ru Yards - 512
Rec Yards - 199
TDs - 6
Fantasy Points: 89

Tomlinson:
Ru Yards - 629
Rec Yards - 254
TDs - 5
Fantasy Points: 97

Tomlinson's next three games are significantly tougher Defenses than Lynch faces: (Defensive Ranks)
Pitt - #1
Indy - #15
Atl - #23
Average Defensive Rank:  #13

Lynch Faces:
Cle - #27
KC - #32
SF - #22
Average Defensive Rank:  #27

That said, my motivation to make this trade is that LT has two favorable matchups in the playoff weeks (oak, KC, TB), and Lynch's aren't quite as good (mia, nyj, den), and I recognize that this trade puts me at risk of missing the playoffs, but that's the risk/reward of the deal.

So I'm looking for opinions.  Especially if this is something you'd vote against, I'd like to hear your reasoning.  If this trade was different, and it was for any other player without Tomlinson's past performance I don't think this discussion would be necessary, but reputation seems to factor in a lot in fantasy, as I have Holt and Harrison on my roster, and like LT are both by FAR having the worst seasons of their careers so far.

We're also considering some balancing with me giving up a lower ranked WR, but core value of the trade is the two RBs.

Buffalo's running game has been terrible for a while now while I can see San Diego improving. I'm curious to what others have to say.

Ok, I'm fine with not doing it.  A trade involving someone out of the playoffs is not surprisingly going to be questioned.

We discussed it in IRC, and this seemed to be the primary reasoning against it:

Quote
Zera as I see it, I'd be trading Lynch's three best matchups of the year for LT's two good matchups in the playoffs
Mnementh exactly, which benefits you, and not spec
Mnementh which is unfair
Zera no way, it totally benefits spec, making the most of the games he has remaining
Mnementh a trade needs to benefit both teams, or it in inherently unfair
chew i agree its unfair
Mnementh since spec stands to gain nothing from the trade, based on his not being in contention
Mnementh then the trade is unfair
Zera so any team that is out of the playoffs cannot improve their team?
Mnementh it is pointless
Mnementh i'll vote against it if it is proposed

I can see that logic.  I'm fine with an unwritten rule against trades with teams who are ruled out of the playoffs, as it seems to be the path of least drama and bickering.

Why is it pointless ? I can spoil other peoples season by winning and knocking them out of contention plus I can try and not finish last. LT has been a bust this season and the Lynch was sick the last couple of games, that's why they had poor performance. I have Lynch on my other league and he's a starter.

Let it be noted that I suggested the trade and not Zera. The only reason I see you guys vetoing the trade is cause they would be afraid of either me knocking them out of the playoffs or that Zera's gamble for trading for the bust that has been LT pays off.

It's fine.  My remaining matchups are tough ones and I need to win at least one, possibly two to make the playoffs, and so lynch is a better bet to do that.  If I lose out all three, I'm out for sure, so maybe I should play for the sure thing.  If I can manage to win all three, I might still earn a first round bye.

Either way, we should have made this trade sooner.  I can understand people's uneasy-ness of this, so I'd rather just avoid it.  Plus, Lynch's playoffs matchups aren't THAT bad, and in fact, his final week is vs Denver who is almost last vs the run.

That's not the reason behind my logic at least.  I can understand how you could see it being fair and at the same time, I see why multiple people would be paranoid about the actual trade itself.  At the beginning of this season, I could see this trade going through, but at this point, neither team has a really strong running game.

Besides, you should know by know that people bicker over everything in our fantasy leagues Smiley

No.

a weekly game that challenges you to show your skills by correctly identifying a winning professional football team in each of the 17 weeks of the regular season.
Like 60% of the public league I joined picked Philly, and I hope they all get ruled out.

Good News for xterm though.  The Eagles survive one more week without an EMBARRASSING LOSS.... hahahahah
